Golden Globes 2017, Meryl Streep Takes On President Donald Trump

Buzz-about projects like the musical movie La La Land and comedy FX TV Atlanta won big at Sunday’s Golden Globes. But the most powerful moment of the night belonged to Meryl Streep, who used her acceptance speech for the honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2017 Golden Globes, delivering a harsh rebuke of President-elect Donald Trump and defending press freedom.

Recalling the moment Trump sneered at a disabled journalist from The New York Times at a campaign rally, Streep brand a performance last year that “stunned” her.

There is nothing good about this, but it was effective, and it did its job. He made the audience laugh and intended to grin.

It was the moment when the person requesting to sit at the most respected bank in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked for privileges, power and the ability to fight back.

It’s kind of broke my heart when I saw it and I still can not get it out of my head because it was not in a movie. It was real life.

And that instinct to humiliate when it is modeled by a person on the public platform, by someone powerful, who filters down everyone’s life, because it kind of gives permission for others to do the same.

According to new york times

In what the New York Times described as a brief phone interview on Monday morning, Trump said he had not seen Streep’s remarks. But Trump said he was not surprised that he had been criticized by “liberal filmmakers,” and rejected Streep as Hillary Clinton’s supporter.

Trump also denied, as he has many times, that he intended to mock Times Serge Kovaleski for his deficiency, the incident, which Streep was apparently referring to.

Just a few hours later, Trump reiterated his remarks with the Times in a trio of tweets.

Streep also urged the public to support the Committee for the Protection of Journalists from maintaining an independent press and specifically outlined wide and varied birthplaces and many nominees and Golden Globe winners.

“Hollywood is full of strangers and strangers,” she said. “And if we kick them all out, you have nothing to do, but football and mixed martial arts, not art.”

Streep was not the only one to assume the president-elect less than two weeks before his inauguration.

Host Jimmy Fallon joked at the start of the show, the Golden Globe was “one of the few places where the United States still honors the referendum.”

Despite accepting the award for best supporting actor in a limited television series, night co-star manager Hugh Laurie joked that it would be the last Golden Globes ceremony because the prices are chosen by an association with the words “Hollywood” , “Foreign” and “squeeze” into the title – groups Trump has criticized in the past.

These barbs crowned a night in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association fought the musical film La La Land, handed him a record seven awards including best director by Damien Chazelle, best actor in a musical or comedy by Ryan Gosling and best actress in a musical or Comedy by Emma Stone.
